From 2007 to 2018, artists and theorists in changing formations ran a space in the border region of Basel in the immediate vicinity of a complex consisting of a deportation prison and a reception center. The center resembles a total institution. The asylum seekers are isolated from public life due to the location and the limited times for going out. In this context, bblackboxx claimed to be an independent, emancipatory and self-organized meeting space for people with and without papers, with and without refugee biographies. bblackboxx was also an informal place of learning, where knowledge was created and circulated through direct exchange between all participants.
